According to the United Network of Organ Sharing (UNOS), over 600,000 tissue transplants are performed each year in the U.S. Lung transplantations are performed on patients with diseases such as cystic fibrosis, emphysema, pulmonary fibrosis and pulmonary hypertension. Bilateral, or double, lung transplants, single lung transplants, heart and lung transplants and in some cases, living donor lung transplants are performed. The Lung Transplant Program is dedicated to research and education, as well as excellent care in the management of end-stage organ failure.
The Initial Screening
The following are indications for potential lung transplant candidates if:
- there is limited patient survival due to end-stage lung disease, including emphysema,
- pulmonary fibrosis, primary pulmonary hypertension, etc.
- there is unanimous agreement that no other therapy, medical or surgical, will make improvement a realistic possibility
- the patient is age 65 or younger
- the patient has serious limitation of functional capacity
