A Multidisciplinary Approach for Better Outcomes
Patients diagnosed with thoracic malignancies and other thoracic conditions can receive care from a multidisciplinary team of experts focused solely on treating thoracic cancer. Patients realize the benefits of being seen by a physician team on the same day in one convenient clinic appointment. This experienced team of physicians includes medical oncologists, radiation oncologists, thoracic surgeons, and pulmonologists. After completing clinic visits, the physician team meets in conference to develop a comprehensive treatment plan specifically designed around the patient’s medical condition. Primary care physicians are encouraged to refer patients with imaging abnormalities in the chest for both comprehensive diagnostic workup and treatment.
The Thoracic and General Surgical Oncology Multidisciplinary Team
Medical Oncology
Patients have access to the latest cancer therapies, including both radiation therapy and che-motherapy under one roof. Chemotherapy nurses and medical assistants strive to reduce anxiety by answer-ing questions, offering support and making the entire process as positive as possible.
Radiation Oncology
The clinic offers radiation oncology services, including the advanced technology of Intensity Modulated Radiation Therapy (IMRT), which allows the radiation oncologist to treat the cancer with higher radiation doses while sparing normal surrounding organs.
Thoracic Surgery
If surgery is part of the treatment, the surgical team is usually able to perform surgery with the most minimally invasive techniques, as opposed to using the standard older large chest incision. Theses techniques can include video-assisted surgery, small thoracic incisions without cutting through muscle or removing ribs, or biopsies of chest masses without incisions. Using minimally invasive techniques has been shown to reduce postoperative pain and allow faster recovery.
Pulmonary Medicine
The Clinic is attended by pulmonary medicine doctors who assist in the diagnosis and treatment of patients, as well as optimize patients for surgical procedures. |
